Learning Abroad
Exploring leadership in the context of an international setting is a rewarding experience that can lead to powerful growth. The Leadership Minor is committed to providing global experiences that support students to explore multiple leadership frameworks, address systemic power imbalances, develop their leader identities, and build their toolbox for leading toward collective liberation.
The Leadership Minor offers multiple LEAD-designated learning abroad programs. LEAD-designated learning abroad programs are led by Leadership Minor instructors and count as an elective toward the Leadership Minor. For more information on the courses below, contact [email protected].
Current Leadership Minor Learning Abroad Experiences
Did you know many Learning Abroad experiences can fulfill Leadership Minor requirements?
- If you are in a learning abroad program that is 6 weeks or longer, you are eligible to complete the 1-credit online course OLPD 3332: Global Identity during your learning abroad program. OLPD 3332 will count as your Leadership Minor elective (if taken A-F).
- If you are in a learning abroad program that is shorter than 6 weeks, you do not have the option to take OLPD 3332: Global Identity. However, if you are taking a course during your learning abroad experience that you’d like us to review as a possible elective, please complete the elective course petition.
- Any LEAD-designated learning abroad program (listed above) will automatically count as your Leadership Minor elective.
Leadership Minor electives can be earned even if you have not yet officially declared your Leadership Minor.

Leadership Minor scholarships are possible in part through the support of the Brian S. Fredrickson Family.
In Memory of Brian S. Fredrickson
Brian S. Fredrickson started his journey with the University of Minnesota Leadership Minor when he was an undergraduate in the 2000s. The Minor fueled in him a passion for leadership education which inspired him to earn his Master’s degree in Education from Columbia University.
Brian returned to the Leadership Minor to teach undergraduates how to challenge themselves and others for the greater good. He invested himself deeply into developing others, social change, and global citizenship. Brian then expanded the reach of his impact even further by teaching leadership as a professor with the University of Minnesota Extension Service.
Brian passed away in 2022 due to complications from alcoholism. His family encourages that if you or someone you love struggles with alcohol, be courageous to seek out help.
In his memory, his family generously supports University of Minnesota Leadership Minor students who wish to explore international experiences as a way to develop their leadership understanding and practice.
