Personal Leadership in the University

In this course, students examine their own views of leadership, explore the differences between personal and positional leadership, examine leadership ethics and values, and analyze their own leadership strengths and skills. This course is open to any undergraduate student. Learn about reserved sections for specific student groups.

Leadership, You, and Your Community

LEAD 3961

In this second course of the Leadership Minor, students engage with two key questions: How do leaders build and nurture communities? How do I want to lead in my communities? Students explore relational leadership theory and critically reflect on concepts that can disrupt systemic power imbalances and are integral to leading in community. Students practice utilizing the tools of group facilitation and Liberatory Design for leading in community, and will continue to develop their leader identity in the context of their existing communities and the communities they hope to build in the world.

Leadership Minor: Field Experience

In this community-engaged course, students engage with two key questions: How do organizational leaders manage the tension between aspirations and limitations? How do I want to practice leadership in an organizational context? In this class, we explore transformational leadership theories and critically reflect on how leaders and organizations manage limitations as they work toward their aspirations. In small groups, you will practice community-engaged learning and the concept of reciprocity, while contributing to a community-based organization and learning from its leaders. You will continue to develop your leader identity through critical reflection, engagement with thought leaders, and in the context of an organization. LEAD 3971 is the third course in the Leadership Minor. It is taught in a blended model, with each week including one in-person class meeting, asynchronous learning on Canvas, and work at a community-based organization.

Leadership for Global Citizenship

LEAD 4961W*
3-credits

In this upper-division writing-intensive, capstone course, students pull together the threads of leadership theory and practice they have been working with throughout the Leadership Minor and apply it to intercultural systems thinking in a global and local context. In addition, students gain experience working with diverse leaders from around the world, mapping systems. and planning their own global leadership path within their specific field.

This fourth course in the Leadership Minor is designed to be taken after the field experience course in the final year before graduation.
