The Multicultural Center for Academic Excellence (MCAE), Circle of Indigenous Nations (COIN) & the Leadership Minor have partnered to offer reserved sections of LEAD 1961W: Personal Leadership in the University. You’ll build a community with supportive peers & teachers as you strengthen your academic excellence with other MCAE & COIN students at the U.

LEAD 1961W (3 credits) offers a unique and transformative learning experience.  This highly interactive class challenges traditional notions of leadership to explore more diverse, inclusive, and community-driven approaches.

With 26 students or fewer in each class, you’ll self-reflect and build community as you examine your own views of leadership, explore the differences between various leadership styles, theories, and models, examine self, identity, ethics and values, and explore your own leadership strengths and skills. You’ll have instructors and student interns who are especially experienced, supportive, and highly rated.

This class also meets two Liberal Education requirements needed for your degree progress (Writing Intensive + Civic Life & Ethics Theme).  Plus, students who complete LEAD 1961W may choose to go on to complete the full Leadership Minor.

Who teaches the class?

There are two sections of LEAD 1961W reserved for MCAE students:

My name is Terra Brister I use she/her pronouns. On campus, I work in the Multicultural Center for Academic Excellence (MCAE). I am passionate about supporting students to achieve their dreams and goals while always centering joy. My favorite part of working with you (students) is seeing you smile, laugh, and win. I am the first person in my family to graduate from college. Some random important facts about me are that I enjoy reading in a hammock and cooking in my free time (yes, I will accept all the book and recipe recommendations)!

Jessica P. Cameron, PES Assistant Director

Jessica Cameron

Hometown: Chicago, Illinois

Education: M.A., University of Minnesota; B.S., Iowa State University

Time at the U: I started working at the University in 2015 until 2020, and I am so excited to be back in 2022!

What I do in my free time: I love spending time admiring my 65+ indoor plant collection and loving on my pup Kevi, the sheepadoodle. When I am not busy outdoors or plant shopping with my dog, I like to create. I love embroidery, crocheting, painting, and just about any crime show, podcast, docuseries, etc.

Why I love PES: I love that the program is a leader in proving that higher education can be a system that empowers individuals beyond its historical design. I get to work with a team that includes students, staff, and faculty who are just as excited about community and support as I am!
